Our Research

For over a decade, we have researched the needs of patients with urinary diversions through focus groups, interviews, and surveys. We have also included the perspectives of family members and clinicians.

In our largest study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, we gathered information about more than 1,000 patients with cystectomy and urinary diversion from Kaiser Permanente health systems, some of whom provided detailed information about their quality of life, recovery experiences, and opinions about the urinary diversion they received. With help from several other urologic oncologists, we distilled our research data into a series of key questions that patients and caregivers had before, during and after surgery.
